A look back at my journey into 3D sculpting in Blender: inspired by K-pop, Demon Hunters and Godzilla, with satisfying results and the daunting challenge of retopology

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been continuing my sculpting work in Blender, following a tutorial from DigitalPainting.school, although I’ve taken a few liberties with it.

The first free exercise involved creating a monster’s head, and at a person’s special request, I took inspiration from Sony Animation’s latest hit, Kpop Demon Hunters. This demon appears in the opening scene and the modelling was quite pleasing, but I must admit that once the textures and lighting were added, the final result looks rather sketchy.

The next step guided us through the process of creating the dinosaur shown in the video thumbnail, but I really fancied making Toho’s kaiju, Godzilla. I must say that over the last few weeks, I’ve been eagerly following the American Monsterverse series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

The video didn’t go any further; you had to sign up for the paid section of the course to continue, so I was able to model my creature and generate a quick render, and I must say I think it turned out rather well.

After that, I started on the retopology, and the extent of my incompetence became painfully clear to me. It’s an field I’ve barely touched on so far, and if I had to rig my Godzilla, it would probably be a disaster. So the next few weeks will be devoted to the structure of 3D characters.

It’s worth noting that, as well as the Legendary series, I’m rewatching the MonsterVerse, and I’m currently catching up on the other classic Toho Godzilla films, having watched the 1954 original a few months ago.
Now I alternate between wonder, amusement and, at times, cringing at some particularly dated portrayals. Yes, I’m talking about King Kong’s island in the 1962 film.
